How do I confirm which jail is holding someone?
Start with the official Who’s in Jail search provided by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office. After identifying the correct person, note any facility information shown and contact that jail through the official facility directory to confirm the current location before making arrangements.
Identify the person and facility
Compare the identifying details in the search result with what you know about the person. Record the booking number and facility name if provided. Do not use a matching name alone to decide that you have found the correct person.
For help completing the lookup, see how to use the official Who’s in Jail search. If the result does not identify a facility clearly, ask the relevant agency for clarification rather than guessing from the arrest location.
Contact the correct jail
Use the official Sheriff’s Office directory to find the jail’s contact information. The directory includes stations, civil offices and administrative locations as well as detention facilities, so check the full facility name.
The Sheriff’s main administrative office address is not an inmate housing location. Use the contact for the specific jail when asking about someone’s placement.
Have the person’s full name, date of birth and booking number available, if known. Ask:
- Is this person currently housed at this facility?
- If not, which agency or facility should I contact?
- Where can I find the current visiting or inmate mailing instructions for this facility?
If you do not know the facility
Contact the arresting agency and ask where the person was taken and whether booking or transport has been completed. An arrest location or an earlier booking location does not establish where the person is currently housed.
If the arrest was handled by Chula Vista Police Department, use the arrestee status links on the Chula Vista City Jail page to help identify the receiving facility.
If the county search returns no match, see why someone may not appear in the inmate search for further checks.
Confirm the location before visiting or sending mail
Once the facility is confirmed, follow its current instructions for visits, reservations and correspondence. Verify the correct destination for your purpose; a facility’s street address should not automatically be used as an inmate mailing address.
For arrangements made later, recheck the location rather than relying only on an earlier search result or saved screenshot.
