What the online database covers

The Sheriff describes the database as covering adult criminal defendant warrants issued through the San Diego Superior Court. The search page states that most warrants issued by that court are available online.

This guide concerns warrants for the arrest of a person. It does not provide a search of warrants authorizing law enforcement to search a home, vehicle or other property.

The database is not a comprehensive search of federal warrants, juvenile records, warrants from other counties or every type of court order. It is also not a complete background report or a substitute for the underlying court file.

The official warrant information request page explains the database’s scope and directs users to related services.

Search by a Person’s Name

The official query provides separate fields for last name, first name and middle name. Enter the person’s name as accurately as possible.

The search accepts partial names in the name fields. Partial entries can return more possible matches, which may help when spelling is uncertain but also increases the number of unrelated results.

  1. Open the official warrant lookup.
  2. Enter the available last, first and middle name information in the corresponding fields.
  3. Complete any human-verification step shown by the system.
  4. Submit the search and review possible matches carefully.
  5. Contact the Warrant Office if you need help identifying a record or checking its status.

Compare the available identifying details rather than selecting the first similar name. Common names, similar spellings and incomplete entries can produce uncertain matches.

For a telephone inquiry, the Warrant Office asks callers to have the person’s first and last name, date of birth and warrant number, if available.

A warrant number is different from a court case number, booking number or citation number. Identify the number according to the document on which it appears.

Understand Results and Their Limitations

Information is not real time

The lookup page says the database is updated hourly, seven days a week, but warns that status changes may not appear within the hour. The Sheriff’s related information page also cautions that online information may be up to 24 hours old.

These notices describe possible delays, not a guarantee that every change will appear within a particular period. A recently issued, recalled, served or otherwise changed warrant may not yet be reflected online.

Contact the Warrant Office about the recorded status and the issuing court about court action when the information affects an appearance, payment or other time-sensitive decision.

A missing result is not a clearance

No result may reflect the name entered, the database’s coverage or an update delay. An unsuccessful online search is not a written statement that a person has no warrants.

Likewise, a displayed name match does not independently establish identity. Seek official clarification when the available details do not resolve the match.

Charge references and court records

The Sheriff notes that charge information is not stored in plain English. Use the California Legislative Information website to look up a listed statute, including its code and subsection.

A warrant listing is not a finding of guilt and does not provide the complete case history. Filed documents, hearing records and court orders must be obtained through the appropriate court service. See our court case search guide for information about locating court records.

Do not attempt an arrest based on the database. Do not use a listing to confront or detain someone. Provide relevant information through official law enforcement channels.

Confirm or Address an Outstanding Warrant

Call the Warrant Office at 858-974-2110 for information about an outstanding warrant. Prepare:

  • The person’s first and last name.
  • The person’s date of birth.
  • The warrant number, if available.
  • Relevant notices or court paperwork.

A telephone inquiry or online search does not recall a warrant. For instructions about the required court action, contact the issuing court. If you have an attorney, ask the attorney about the steps appropriate to your case.

When a warrant still appears after being addressed

If a warrant has reportedly been addressed but remains active in the database, the Sheriff says the defendant will generally be referred to the issuing court.

The Sheriff does not maintain the court’s complete file and cannot recall a court-issued warrant solely on the basis of paperwork supplied by the defendant. Contact the issuing court to confirm what action is required and whether the court has issued a recall.

Keep copies of relevant orders and payment records. Completing a payment or another individual step does not necessarily clear the warrant or immediately update the online database.

Bail notices and mandatory appearances

Follow the payment and appearance instructions on your particular bail notice. The Sheriff’s Warrant Information page provides related guidance, but the available procedure depends on the notice and court instructions.

For the bail-notice mailing procedure described on that page, personal checks or money orders are payable to Clerk of the Court. This payee differs from the payee for a written warrant-check request. Use the destination printed on your notice or the destination specified for that procedure.

If the notice requires a mandatory appearance, follow its stated date, time and location. Do not assume that paying bail removes the appearance requirement. Ask the issuing court to clarify any unclear instructions.

The online warrant lookup is a search tool, not a bail payment system. Not every warrant can be resolved through payment.

Request a Written Local Warrant Check

A written local warrant-check response requires a Service Request Form submitted to the Sheriff’s Records & ID Division. This is separate from viewing an online result or making a telephone inquiry.

Use the form linked from the official Warrant Information page and confirm current requirements before submitting.

If an organization requires a particular type of background check or clearance, confirm whether this local warrant-check response meets its requirements before ordering. A local warrant check is not the same service as a local criminal history report or a statewide background check.

Resolve Search and Browser Problems

Scheduled maintenance

The lookup page lists scheduled maintenance each Wednesday at noon, San Diego local time. Service is normally restored within approximately 30 minutes.

If the page is unavailable during maintenance, try again after service resumes. Website downtime does not indicate that a warrant was removed or that a person’s status changed.

Disabled lookup button or missing verification

The Sheriff provides the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Close the browser completely and reopen it if the LookUp button is disabled.
  • Refresh the page if reopening does not resolve the issue.
  • Try a hard refresh: Ctrl + F5 on Windows or Command + Shift + R on a Mac.
  • Complete the human-verification box when it appears.
  • If verification does not appear, update the browser, try another browser or use another device.

The page requires JavaScript for its interactive functions. A technical failure or an incomplete search should not be interpreted as a “no warrant” result.

Submit Information About a Wanted Subject

The Sheriff identifies its online warrant tip form as the preferred way to provide information that may assist with warrant service.

You may remain anonymous. The form allows you to provide a name, telephone number or email address voluntarily.

Useful information can include:

  • The subject’s name, aliases and date of birth, when known.
  • A warrant number, if available.
  • A known home, work or other location.
  • Physical descriptions and distinguishing features.
  • Vehicle details.
  • Known weapons or other information relevant to safe service.

The agency accepts incomplete information that may be useful when combined with other tips. Describe what you know accurately and distinguish uncertain information from confirmed observations.

You may also call the Warrant Tip-Line at 858-974-2327 or mail information to:

A tip submission does not replace an emergency call. Call 9-1-1 when immediate emergency assistance is needed. Do not approach, follow or attempt to detain someone to gather information for a tip.
