Do I need an appointment to adopt a pet?
No appointment is needed for regular walk-in adoptions at San Diego Humane Society campuses during adoption hours. According to the official Adoption Process page, adoptions are completed in person on a first-come, first-served basis. Check in when you arrive so an adoption counselor can help you meet a pet and complete the process.
Check the campus and adoption hours
Before traveling, review the official Hours & Locations page for the campus you plan to visit. Use the listed adoption hours rather than general business or telephone hours.
Adoption locations include San Diego, El Cajon, Escondido and Oceanside. Oceanside has separate locations for dogs and for cats and small animals, so confirm the correct destination.
If you want to meet a particular pet
Browse the available animals through the Adoption Process page before your visit, and note the pet’s name and listed location. If the profile gives special meeting instructions or the location is unclear, contact San Diego Humane Society at 619-299-7012 before traveling.
You can also browse animals in person without choosing one online first. When you check in, tell staff whether you have a particular pet in mind or would like help finding a match.
Allow time for check-in and counseling
Walk-in service can involve a wait, especially on weekends. San Diego Humane Society says the adoption process typically takes about an hour once you meet with a counselor; waiting time is additional.
If you decide to adopt, be prepared to take your new pet home the same day. See what to bring when adopting a pet for preparation details.
Other services may require appointments
The walk-in policy applies to regular campus adoptions. If you are arranging a different service, such as returning or surrendering a pet, check that service’s instructions separately.
