Can I search for a court case by name?

Yes. The San Diego Superior Court’s official Court Index offers a “Party Name Search” for locating cases using the name of a party involved. You do not need to know the case number to begin a name search. However, the index does not cover every case, and a matching name alone does not confirm that a record belongs to the person you are looking for.

Start with Party Name Search

Open the Court Index, review its terms and select “Party Name Search.” Enter the party’s name according to the search form’s instructions. Check the spelling against any court paperwork you have.

If you already know the court case number, you can use “Case Number Search” instead. For a criminal matter, “DA Number Search” is another option if you have the District Attorney’s case number.

Compare the matching case details

The court’s Online Case Search page explains that results provide the case title, case number, file location, case type, filing date and parties involved.

Use those details together when reviewing a possible match:

  • Compare the listed parties with the people involved in the matter.
  • Check whether the case type and filing date fit the case you need.
  • Note the court location holding the file.
  • Save the complete case number for further inquiries.

People can share the same name. If the details are not enough to confirm a match, contact the appropriate court business office for instructions on reviewing the record.

Understand the search limits

The Court Index does not include juvenile cases, traffic or minor offense cases, or cases filed before 1974. At some court locations, civil limited and misdemeanor records may be available for only 10 years.

A name search with no results does not establish that no case exists. Use the court’s official contact directory to ask the appropriate business office about records outside the index’s coverage.

Check the official record for case details

The Court Index lists filed cases but does not provide details about criminal charges or case outcomes. An entry may remain even when a case was dismissed without a finding of guilt or responsibility.

Once you identify the case, use the case number and file location with the court’s Accessing Court Records instructions to find the appropriate Register of Actions or request access to the official record.
