Why is a case not appearing in the online search?
A case may not appear because the search details do not match the record, the case belongs to another court, or its type or age falls outside the online system’s coverage. A search with no results does not establish that no case exists. Start by checking your paperwork and the San Diego Superior Court’s official Court Index, then contact the appropriate court business office if needed.
Check the court and search details
Confirm that the case was filed with San Diego Superior Court. Its Court Index is not a statewide or federal court search.
Compare your entries with any court documents you have:
- Check the spelling of the party’s name.
- Use the complete court case number and follow the search form’s formatting instructions.
- Use “DA Number Search” for a District Attorney case number rather than entering it as a court case number.
If you do not have the court case number, try the party-name option. See how to search for a court case by name for guidance on reviewing possible matches.
Check whether the index covers the case
The court’s Online Case Search page identifies these limits:
- Juvenile cases are not included.
- Traffic and minor offense cases are not included.
- Cases filed before 1974 are not included.
- At some locations, civil limited and misdemeanor records may be available for only 10 years.
For an excluded or older case, follow the case-specific instructions on the Accessing Court Records page. Older records may require research at the appropriate court location.
Distinguish a missing case from an unavailable document
If you found a case entry but cannot open a document, the case has been located. Online document access is a separate issue and varies by case type. Some records require a copy request or an in-person visit, and sealed or confidential records have access restrictions.
Use the Accessing Court Records page to choose the appropriate Register of Actions or records-request instructions.
Ask the appropriate court business office
Use the court’s official contact directory. Have the parties’ names, case number if known, case type, approximate filing date and any court notices available. Explain which system and search details you used.
Ask staff how to locate the record and whether research or retrieval fees apply. If you have a hearing notice or filing deadline, contact the court promptly to confirm your next steps. An unsuccessful online search does not cancel a hearing or extend a deadline.
